Southern Comfort RV Resort

This is a first, the 2017 blog is beginning in Florida. We departed Myrtle Beach the middle of December this winter and I included that time in the end of the 2016 blog. January one found us in the Orlando Thousand Trails Campground. Millie had Flown out to New Mexico to be with RaeAnne and the grandkids at Christmas and returned to Orlando on New Years Eve.

Entrance to the campground

With just a day to adjust to east coast time we hit the road and pointed the motorhome south. We stayed on highway 27 down through central Florida, through the sugar cane fields and all the way to the Miami suburbs before taking rt 997 the last 30 miles or so to Florida City.

Our street in the campground

Our home for two months is Southern Comfort RV Resort. It is about as far south as you can be without getting on the causeway to the Keys. Southern Comfort is not a luxury resort but it is a very nice, well managed campground. It has green grass, concrete pads, paved streets and palm trees.

One of the many "toys" folks have brought with them

I estimate at least 90% of our fellow RV'ers are snowbirds here for months at a time. We're probably equally divided between Canadians and cold weather refugees from the north states. Our immediate neighbors are French Canadians on one side and an expat Italian who has lived in New York for the last 30 years on the other side. RV's range from converted buses to motorhomes worth hundreds of thousands. We also seem to be equally divided between pull behind RV's and motorhomes. There are no permanent trailers in the campground so it hasn't morphed into a mobile home park, like a lot of snowbird parks do.

The Tiki Hut Bar

Millie and I both power walk in the morning, she goes first, because she can get up and go! I drink a pot of coffee and contemplate life for a while before stepping out. This morning at the end of my routine I deviated out of the campground and went up to a convenience store on the highway (US1) to buy a paper. They had Krispie Cream donuts but I swear I didn't indulge! It was there that I saw a development sign for the area between Southern Comfort and the highway. We're getting a new shopping center, anchored by a Public's grocery store. That's great news, Public's is my favorite grocery store. When Millie was in New Mexico for Christmas I went to Public's everyday!

Many motorcycles here

Two miles up the road is a large YMCA. We registered there today and will begin strength training soon, we plan on going 3 days a week. That's about it, we're settled in and enjoying life here in warm sunny southern Florida!

We are here for two months
